Bronze Water Nymphs
“Bronze Water Nymphs" - A challenge commission from a wealthy friend of mine. She had just installed a beautiful Japanese koi goldfish pond in her side yard. It had lots of character with small plants and wonderful rocks but she said it needed something, and I agreed. Since I like to sculpt nude women I suggested some fairies or nymphs and she liked the idea. I proceeded to make the wax originals, to be cast traditionally in the lost wax method. About half way through the process she requested that they be “ PRETTY” and I’ve always had a hard time making anything pretty. So…as time went on I finally presented them to her “in their wax state” - when they could still be altered before casting. She seemed shocked and studied their poses and faces for a while. We all decided each one had character, maybe not beauty, but lots of charisma! Someone said one of them even resembled Miles Davis, the Jazz trumpeter, and I had to agree! I said it’s not too late…I can change their faces and she said no. She liked the individual looks and I was to leave them alone. After they were cast nude, we went to a mega bead store in Atlanta and found appropriate chains and dangles to clothe them. They ended up being just what the setting around the pond needed and they sure beat the classic gnome from Walmart! Made in 1992 - 18" tall.
