Chinese War Princess
“Chinese War Princess” - 2 of 5 from the Horse Series completed in 2022. The Chinese War Princess, was made out of my desire to make a horse similar to the Terra Cotta warriors found in China in the 1980s. I had always liked the faces and heads of those terra cotta horses unearthed with the soldiers, although they were not readily shown to the public until much later. The first of my series has a different head than the others. The stance is also made by placing the hoofs tightly together so he can be placed on a small pedistol. the whole horse and rider is then put on an ornate carriage as if in a parade possiably a victory parade. The figure size was chosen to make the horse seem much larger than it would be in real life. I choose to paint the chinese symbol for horse on the base solely for the color effect, I also chose red to emphhise what I believe is the chinese's definitive color " RED CHINA". the whole piece seemed to be lacking to me ...then the BATTLE MONKEYS were born. They give the piece a little more sense of the absurd, and can be placed almost anywhere on the piece and seem right at home. Mixed media - mostly carved white pine. Approx 24” x 14”.
