Crosswalk Guard
"Crosswalk Guard" - This work is made from a small dogwood tree that died in my yard a few years ago. I was intrigued by the various rotted holes it had in it and how to carve around them. The finished work is fun to drop small chains and other things through the holes and make them reappear in some other part of her body. After striping her wings an old memory came to me ....when I was in grammar school, I was a crosswalk guard and had a striped pole to keep the children from getting run over. When you threw the spinning pole to one of the other guards it became an optical illusion and you caught it off center....every time. It's funny to me how just a set of strips on something I created set off a memory of something so obscure in my childhood. I'm also sure no viewer in the future will ever conjure up that story, but on the same note I'm also sure it might bring back some memories good or bad, that's what art should do, I hope. About 30” tall - mixed media.
